Victim Signaling and Dark Triad Personality Traits

The meta-take: modern Western democracies have become "particularly hospitable environments for victim signalers to execute a strategy of nonreciprocal resource extraction." Strong egalitarian values lead people to believe any outcome gap is illegitimate; the cultural value placed on alleviating suffering means claiming victimhood is a route to material resources. The environment rewards the strategy; Dark Triad individuals tailor themselves to it.

The honest gap: the piece is a summary of one study program, not a meta-analysis. The replication evidence (r = .35 in Study 1, r = .52 in the replication with a more robust scale) is encouraging but the sample populations, the victim-signalling scale items, and the generalisability to non-Western contexts are all worth flagging. Real victims exist and Henderson is explicit about that — the claim is about signalers, not about victims as a class.
