Adaptation is never a neutral copy — it is an act of recreation that fills gaps, reflects the adapter's sensibilities, and often strays dramatically from its source. Whether transplanting Tolkien into a grittier cinematic register, inventing entire scenes to repair narrative weaknesses, or mining original prose for reassembled dialogue, the adapter's taste and priorities reshapes the material more than fidelity ever could. At its most aggressive, adaptation can completely invert the meaning of what it adapts, as when the Army of the Dead is transformed from a handful of uncertain ghosts into an invincible force. Outside of art, the same principle holds: settling into a new place requires surviving an unavoidable clock of friction before genuine judgment becomes possible. In every domain, adaptation is less about preservation and more about what survives the act of translation.
