To get crisp shadow definition inside the crevices of a terrain mesh, plug an Ambient Occlusion node into a Math node set to Power, crank the power value up to ~25, and multiply that result into the base color with a Mix node. It gives terrain much more believable mountain depth without needing complex geometry. The same AO→Math→Multiply chain works any time flat or low-poly surfaces look washed out.
